Wellspring 2001 Trip Report

Festival Dates: 5/16/01 to 5/20/01
This Wellspring was very special for me. I was installed as the new Archdruid. I've included a story written about it by my daughter Phoenix below.

Along with the installation, I presented "The Way of the Trees" workshop on Thursday and two workshops on Friday, "ADF Study Plan - Where do we stand" and "Daily Devotional Rites." I also took part in the Bardic Circle on Friday night.

This was another good sales event for ADF regalia with sales totaling about $300.
Distance traveled: 466 miles.

The following story was published in the Summer Solstice issue of Muin Light, our Grove newsletter and was submitted for publication in Oak Leaves, ADF National's magazine.

The Installation of the Archdruid

The day opened clear and warm on Saturday, the 19th of May at our Wellspring Gathering. It seemed that all our energies were still flowing toward the special event. There were workshops scheduled and meetings to be had but in the back of that entire buzz, was knowledge that this day was special. For today was the day that Ár nDraíoct Féin consecrated the new Archdruid.

The Grove of the Sacred Crows gathered myself and the head of our Artisan's Guild to discuss the ritual planned to help attune Skip for the festivals ritual culmination. Rob Barton had written a ritual for Skip that even the simple read-through sent shivers down my psychic self. I just couldn't wait to see this even through. What would my dad think? I had hoped that this was what he was hoping for.

Finally, clad all in black, and Skip resplendent in his full ritual attire, we made our way to the pre-chosen spot. Upon reaching our destination, we saw that Skip had stopped to ponder the true magic of our growing Earth Mother. He found a place where several plant species grew together, separate but one. Truly a symbol of ADF and our groves.

When the final preparations were made Skip was brought forth to sit beneath the tall maple tree and to gaze out at the forest. He was bade to listen to the teaching and wisdom of our ancestors. And to see within a child's eyes the power and strength of tomorrow. He drank from the cup of truth from the well of wisdom, was anointed with honey and oil and dressed again in his Druid robes. This ritual was simple, powerful, and true with it's content. After the attunement was completed, Skip was left with the forest and his thoughts.

As the sun traveled further on his path, the sound of the horn gathered the folk assembled for the work. To the sound of the slow beaten drum, the assembled to the nemeton at Brushwood Folklore center. There around fire, well and tree, we gathered. All the kindred and Skip's matron and patron were invoked, and then he was called forth. Met by Fox and the Archdruid Emeritus, Isaac Bonewits, Skip was challenged.

"Will you work for the people of ADF and put their needs before your own?" Asked Fox.
"I will," intoned Skip.

He would, he has, and he will continue to do so. How many of us can make this sacrifice?

The ritual flowed around us all, spiraling in around Skip and all I heard were those first words of his sacrifice. Skip told those assembled his visions for ADF and made an offering of his own life and power. Many, MANY others stepped forth and added their strength and offerings to the Kindred and our working. With all the sacrifice of treasured and valued things, Skip's first words called out to me again.

I saw people embrace him, look him in the eyes and draw out emotion from within him. Tears and laughter mingled in our magical moment. Time again spiraled, this time out to bring us back to our mundane world.

Food and spirits did we find, as well as friends and fun for all. Many kind words and congratulations assailed Skip, who seemed to positively glow with happiness. Our evening potluck teemed with conversation, challenge from one warrior to another, and the overall excitement from a powerful and important ritual.

The last event of the evening was the Sumbel, a Norse drinking rite. The folk gathered in the roundhouse amongst the banners of the groves assembled, tables laden with drink and a fire large enough to warm the coldest heart. Oaths were made, tribute to our new Archdruid offered, as well as other deserving folk. Toasts and boasts were made as laughter and energy flowed, and still Skip's words of sacrifice were still in my head.
"Will you work for the people of ADF and put their needs before your own?" Asked Fox.
"I will," intoned our new Archdruid.

He would, he has, and he will continue to do so.

He is a powerful man whose intelligence and drive for perfection as he sees it will steer our ADF into a new era. We are lucky to have him in our grove and as part of our lives. I know I am honored to call him Dad.

I’ve included some pictures that I took at the festival below.
